A competition weekend is more valuable when your shop treats it as a team project, not just an individual challenge.
On April 3rd and 4th, 2027, installers from Canada and the United States will meet at the Niagara Falls Convention Centre for the Canadian Tint Expo & Competition. The event will feature the Great Canadian Tint Competition, Flat Glass Championship, PPF/Wrap Competition and Canada vs. USA Cross Border Showdown.
For shop owners, this creates an opportunity to send three people with different strengths, prepare them with a shared plan and return with more than a trophy. A well-selected team can improve technical standards, create valuable marketing content, strengthen supplier relationships and give employees a reason to feel invested in the future of the business.
The current team offer makes that approach especially practical: buy two competition registrations and receive the third free. The regular value is $987, the special team rate is $658, and the savings are $329. The three registrations can be mixed between eligible competition categories, with only the next 20 eligible spots available.
Here is how to build a team that makes the most of the weekend.

1. Choose installers for complementary strengths
The best three-person team is not always your three fastest installers. It is the group that covers the widest range of skills while supporting one another under pressure.
Start by evaluating your team in five areas:
- Technical quality: Who consistently delivers clean, contamination-free installations?
- Precision: Who produces the tightest edges, straightest cuts and most consistent gaps?
- Speed and time management: Who works efficiently without sacrificing finish quality?
- Adaptability: Who can adjust when the film, panel, tools or working conditions are unfamiliar?
- Professionalism: Who will represent your shop well in front of customers, judges, vendors and cameras?
A strong team might include:
The automotive tint specialist
This installer is comfortable with shrinking, rear windows, side windows and production-level vehicle work. They should be able to follow a repeatable process while maintaining quality under a time limit.
The architectural or flat-glass specialist
Flat glass demands accurate measuring, preparation, film handling and water removal. An installer who does not work on automotive vehicles every day may still be the strongest choice for the Flat Glass Championship.
The PPF or wrap specialist
This person brings skill in surface preparation, positioning, stretch management, corners, edges and finishing. Their experience is especially valuable for the PPF/Wrap Competition and may also strengthen your shop’s ability to handle higher-value protection work.
If one installer is strong across several disciplines, that is useful, but do not overlook the value of sending specialists. A team with different strengths can train together, compare processes and cover more of the event.
2. Decide how to use the three registrations
The offer allows shops to mix the three registrations between eligible categories. That flexibility means your team does not have to compete in the same event.
Option A: One installer per discipline
This is the most balanced lineup:
- Window tint
- Flat glass
- PPF or vinyl wrap
This approach gives your business representation across three distinct skill areas and creates the most varied content for your customers.
Option B: Double down on your core service
If automotive tint is your main revenue driver, you might send two installers to the Great Canadian Tint Competition and one to PPF/wrap or flat glass.
This can work well when:
- You want to benchmark two different installation processes.
- You are building depth in your tint department.
- You want friendly internal competition between senior and emerging installers.
- Your shop is preparing to add another service line.
Option C: Build around the Cross Border Showdown
The Canada vs. USA Cross Border Showdown is not simply another individual heat. It is a country-versus-country format involving selected Canadian and American installers. Individual results contribute to the overall team score.
For that reason, treat the Cross Border Showdown as a strategic opportunity rather than automatically assuming that one of the three registrations is a direct entry. Review the official competition rules and format, watch for organizer instructions and contact the event team if you want to understand eligibility or selection.
A shop may choose one tint specialist, one PPF/wrap specialist and one flat-glass installer while identifying which competitor is best positioned to represent Canada if selected.
3. Prepare using the judging criteria
The Canadian Tint Expo judging system rewards professional execution, not speed alone.
The published general scoring breakdown is:
- Installation Quality: 40%
- Precision & Edges: 20%
- Technique & Film Control: 15%
- Completion & Time Management: 15%
- Professionalism & Work Area: 10%
That breakdown should shape your preparation from the start.
Do not only time your installers. Score them.
During practice sessions, record:
- Contamination, fingers, creases and bubbles
- Edge-gap consistency
- Cut quality and finishing
- Film handling and shrinking technique
- Workstation organization
- Safety and tool control
- Time remaining at completion
The competition includes a qualifying round followed by a championship round. Finalists begin the championship round with a clean slate, so a strong qualifier earns advancement, but the final installation is a new opportunity for every finalist.
That makes repeatable process more important than one exceptional practice run.

4. Use the months before April as a training cycle
A three-person competition team should have a schedule, not just good intentions.
Four to six months out: select and assess
Choose your installers, confirm the categories and complete baseline timed installations. Identify each person’s strongest technical area and biggest scoring risk.
Three months out: standardize the process
Create a shared checklist for preparation, tool layout, film handling, installation and final inspection. The goal is not to make every installer work identically. It is to make sure every installer understands the shop’s quality standard.
Two months out: introduce pressure
Run timed heats using unfamiliar panels or vehicles when possible. Add realistic distractions: limited workspace, an audience, a camera or another installer working nearby.
The competition environment will be different from a quiet bay at your shop. Practising under pressure helps reduce surprises.
One month out: refine details
Focus on the scoring areas that cost points. Tighten edges. Improve contamination control. Remove unnecessary movements. Test tool kits and decide what each installer will bring.
Also review the official rules, allowed tools, competitor briefing details and final technical requirements as they are released.
Final two weeks: taper and protect consistency
Do not rebuild every process immediately before the event. Maintain light, focused practice and prioritize rest, travel planning and equipment checks.
An exhausted installer is more likely to rush, miss a detail or lose concentration.
5. Plan the weekend around the schedule
The competition schedule is split across both days:
- Saturday, April 3: Wrap/PPF Battle in the morning and Flat Glass Battle in the afternoon
- Sunday, April 4: Great Canadian Tint Competition and Canada vs. USA Cross Border Clash in the afternoon
That gives shops a natural opportunity to support one another. Installers competing on Saturday can watch Sunday’s events, study other techniques and encourage their teammate. The group can also divide responsibilities for filming, taking notes and speaking with vendors.
The event is expected to include 65+ competitors, 45 booths and 50 competition spots, so plan accommodation and travel early. The Niagara Falls Convention Centre is located at 6815 Stanley Avenue, close to hotels, restaurants and the Fallsview district.
Use the trip-planning guide to organize transportation, lodging and border-crossing considerations for your team.
6. Measure the return beyond the trophy
Competition participation can create business value long after the awards are presented.
Brand exposure
Your installers will be working in front of industry professionals, vendors, manufacturers and other shop owners. Branded shirts, professional behaviour and consistent social media coverage can turn that visibility into future conversations.
Team skills and confidence
A competition exposes process gaps that normal production work can hide. Installers learn to evaluate their work more critically, manage time and stay composed when every movement matters.
That confidence can transfer directly to daily production.
Recruitment and retention
Employees want opportunities to grow. Sending a team communicates that your shop invests in craftsmanship and professional development. It can also help attract installers who want to work in a shop with higher standards and a clear path forward.
Supplier relationships
The Canadian window tint expo will bring manufacturers, distributors and product specialists together in one place. Your team can test products, ask technical questions and build relationships that support future purchasing and training decisions.
Marketing content
Plan your content before the event. Capture:
- Team selection and preparation
- Practice sessions
- Travel and setup
- Behind-the-scenes interviews
- Competition-day reactions
- Product demonstrations
- Results and lessons learned
Even if your team does not win, the story can become a valuable series of posts, videos, email updates and customer conversations.
For shops that want to make the weekend a broader networking experience, the VIP Experience includes VIP admission, the Friday Night VIP Dinner, one roll of Scorpion window film, 2027 VIP gear, swag and giveaways.

Build your three-person plan now
The smartest way to approach the Niagara Falls tint event is to start with your business goals.
Do you want to strengthen automotive tint? Develop flat-glass capability? Add PPF or wrap services? Give an emerging installer more confidence? Create a stronger shop brand across Canada and the United States?
